Prof. Istvan Urban Day: Vertikale und horizontale Augmentation inklusive Sausage Technique

The training programme of the Urban Regeneration Institute in Budapest attracts oral surgeons and practitioners from all over the world. As the founder and namesake of the internationally recognised institute, Prof. Urban teaches innovative approaches for horizontal and vertical ridge augmentation in various course formats. With the "Sausage Technique", he also offers a specially developed concept with which effective horizontal bone gain can be achieved. Further training courses with Prof Urban belong to the absolute master class in the field of dental surgery. It is not without reason that the courses with one of the most inspiring speakers in the dental industry are fully booked until next year.

However, if you want to experience Prof Urban live, you don't have to travel to Budapest: This autumn, Hager & Meisinger is bringing the renowned expert to Germany and organising the Prof. Istvan Urban Day, a compact one-day event including a lecture and workshop. The event is a must for every interested practitioner, not only geographically but also in terms of price.

At the event, participants can gain new insights into the field of alveolar ridge augmentation and expand their practical skills. Together with the organiser, an exciting agenda has been developed that summarises the most important aspects of theory and practice. The event will start with a lecture by Prof Urban on horizontal and vertical augmentation and the "Sausage Technique" developed by him. A subsequent three-hour optional workshop offers participants the opportunity to delve even deeper into the subject matter and receive a personal introduction to the technique from him. In favour of an intensive learning experience, the number of participants in the workshops is limited. There are currently only a few places left.

The event is intended to provide a framework for further training, but also for the exchange of views between the participating doctors. The Hotel Nikko, located in the centre of Düsseldorf, will provide a suitable atmosphere and attractive catering. Registration is possible via the online shop and the website of the organiser Hager & Meisinger (www.meisinger.de).

Surgical membranes play a central role in the field of implantology and oral surgery. They are always used when there is a ridge defect or bone recession and new bone needs to be built up. Depending on the application, different material properties are required. The new Reinforced PTFE Mesh from CytoplastTM combines several favourable properties in one membrane. The non-resorbable membrane made of high-density PTFE has a titanium reinforcement and a unique macroporous design that enables cell exchange between the bone graft and the periosteum. This makes it suitable for use in guided bone regeneration (GBR), among other things.

Meisinger is expanding its diverse range of regenerative membranes from the CytoplastTM brand. The non-absorbable membrane combines the principle of the classic titanium grid with a PTFE membrane. A stable titanium reinforcement ensures long-term space creation, which promotes horizontal and vertical ridge augmentation. In addition, the Reinforced PTFE Mesh has a unique macroporous design that allows infiltration of blood vessels into the bone graft. This distinguishes it from PTFE membranes, which are used exclusively as a physical barrier and have a cell-occlusive effect. With a thickness of 200 μm, it adapts flexibly to all tissue contours and remains dimensionally stable in vivo over the long term.

The concept and design of the membrane was developed together with Prof. Dr Istvan Urban with the aim of accelerating bone maturation as part of vertical alveolar ridge augmentation[1]. Early vascularisation is of great importance in guided bone regeneration (GBR), as the associated supply of nutrients and messenger substances is a decisive factor in the formation of new bone tissue. The 0.66 mm macropores of the Reinforced PTFE Mesh support sufficient vascularisation from the periosteum to the bone graft. This property is not essential for small defects, but becomes valuable as the size of the defect increases. However, to prevent fribroblasts from migrating and disrupting bone regeneration, the Reinforced PTFE Mesh can also be covered with a resorbable collagen membrane.

The Dentsply Sirona Zirconia Intraoral Polishing Kit was developed for zirconia materials and is ideal for the Dentsply Sirona CEREC MTL™ Zirconia. With the MEISINGER Twist Polishers included in the kit, flawless results can be achieved even in hard-to-reach areas thanks to the very flexible polishing lamellae. Thanks to their material-friendly design, the original surface structure of the restoration is retained. The Z850F diamond included in the set also enables gentle adjustment of margins and occlusal surfaces.

MEISINGER has put together the Dentsply Sirona Glass Ceramic Intraoral Polishing Kit for processing glass ceramics such as the Dentsply Sirona CEREC Tessera™. The polishing set contains the 833F diamond with fine grit, which can be used to precisely adjust the anterior lingual and posterior surfaces. Three of the award-winning MEISINGER Twist Polishers also ensure a natural lustre with low heat development.

Multiple applications in the laboratory
the Dentsply Sirona Universal Extraoral Polishing & Shaping Kit contains a set of MEISINGER instruments for laboratory work. The set was designed for efficient and precise finishing and polishing of CAD/CAM materials and is particularly suitable for restorations with CEREC MTL™ Zirconia and CEREC Tessera™ from Dentsply Sirona.

For exposed implant necks, bone augmentation with the patient's own bone is still considered the gold standard according to . The carrot technique according to Prof Dr Fouad Khoury enables stable core bone to be taken directly from the implant site and transplanted. At a series of courses organised by MEISINGER on 26 February 2022, participants learned exactly how to proceed with this technique. In the newly opened training room at the company's site in Neuss, Dr Alexander Zastera presented the topic in theory and accompanied the 30 or so participants during a practical hands-on training session. "I want to teach the participants the carrot technique in such a way that they can put it into practice the very next day ," says Dr Alexander Zastera, who learned the autologous augmentation technique first-hand at the private dental clinic Schloss Schellenstein and uses it on a daily basis.
There are many reasons to use the procedure in practice: By implanting autologous core bone, not only the osteoinductive and osteoconductive properties but also the osteogenetic potential of the autologous material are optimally utilised. In contrast to the use of foreign material, there is also no risk of the healing process being disrupted by allergic or immune reactions. Another major advantage for patient and practitioner is that the bone is harvested directly from the implant site through a primary trephine hole. The bone material required for augmentation is therefore used efficiently and a second harvesting site is not necessary. The patient benefits from reduced additional stress and a shorter overall treatment time. As no foreign materials are used, the costs for the treatment can also be reduced.
According to Dr Zastera, the carrot technique requires precise instruction and targeted training. "Overall, however, it can be said that the procedure can be quickly integrated into everyday practice . After this course, every dentist with surgical experience will be able to use the carrot technique for themselves and their patients."
Kick-off for an exciting training year
The course with Dr Zastera was the perfect prelude to many more training events that MEISINGER has planned as part of the Bone Management Academy . The Academy programme, designed in collaboration with leading scientists and practitioners, offers both experienced users and beginners the opportunity to deal intensively with the topics of bone augmentation, implantology and content relating to practice management and to undergo further training. The Young Dental Experts Camps, which take place twice a year at the end of university training, offer initial guidance for specialisation in the field of implantology.
In order to provide participants with a comprehensive picture of a range of topics, MEISINGER co-operates with a wide range of established dental companies. As a result, competing treatment methods can also be discussed and participants are provided with a sound knowledge base to integrate the most suitable method into their everyday practice.
The course series on the carrot technique is still visiting Munich and Hanover this year. Further dates are being planned for the second half of the year due to high demand. All information on the current dates can be found on the MEISINGER website www.MEISINGER.de.
